Cliches spoil a fresh idea
Angel Rani, April 02, 2016, DHNS
Ki & Ka
Hindi (U/A)
Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Rajit Kapoor
Direction: R Balki
Rating: **
Meet the new mama’s boy. Make it the mother of all mama’s boys. Arjun Kapoor wants to be just like his housewife mom — the greatest “artist” to have ever walked planet home.
But corporate robot Kareena won’t settle for anything less than “the CEO”. So when the two get married, Mr Kapoor turns the Domestic God, managing meals and maids alike. The dream husband elicits oohs and aahs in the housewives club and is the hot topic of discussion in aunty circles.
Meanwhile, Mrs Kapoor races up the career ladder, leaving all household headaches to the MBA-topper homemaker hubby.
Director R Balki has an oven-fresh idea in a man manning the kitchen counter all the time. Ki & Ka starts off well, too. But the platter loses charm once the characters fall for the usual ego battles.
Rajat Kapoor, the tycoon father, comes in at regular intervals to instill some “mard” sense into his son, prodding him to do periodic “chaddi checks”.
Anyway, that doesn’t deter the couple from having plenty of action between the sheets. Still, despite all the physical intimacy, Kareena and Arjun fail to light any marital spark.
And then comes another couple — Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan in a cameo — who shows how to pull it off in five minutes. Playing themselves, the senior pair comes up with the most sensible and believable lines about gender stereotyping.
