Swara’s X factor
A quick chat with the actor on her projects
There are many things that we don’t know about Swara Bhaskar, but here’s a first. Swara knows how to read and write Tamil. She is no Tamilian, but took it up as an optional language during her schooling in Delhi. She’s trained in classical dance under senior Bharatanatyam artiste Leela Samson and often visits the city during the kutcheri season. And this is exactly what gives her a special Chennai connect.
Soaking in the success of her latest release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, where she plays Salman’s step-sister Chandrika, she says, “I am extremely glad that I got a chance to work in this film. My character was very well-written. Most of my scenes are with Salman sir; I enjoyed shooting for the film.”
Swara has been part of a string of successful films like Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Raanjhanaa.
But that’s not all. This Friday, her fans have a reason to smile as she will appear on the silver screen as a seductress in X: Past is Present, which has been jointly helmed by 11 directors, including Abhinav Shiv Tiwari, Anu Menon, Hemant Gaba, Nalan Kumarasamy, Pratim D Gupta, Q, Raja Sen, Rajshree Ojha, Sandeep Mohan, Sudhish Kamath and Suparn Verma, and offers a fresh take on man-woman relationship.
“My portion of the film was shot in the outskirts of Chennai,” she says. Written by Thiagarajan Kumararaja and directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, Swara adds her role is interesting.
The actor is also impressed with the working style in Kollywood. “The way they function, especially the punctuality, is something that I look up to. Everyone seems to be working with clockwork precision.”
Swara is also interested in writing. “If I were to do anything besides acting, it would be that,” she says, whose wishlist includes being cast opposite Johnny Depp, Amitabh Bachchan and Ajith.
Up next is Nil Batte Sannata, a film that has already garnered attention at international film festivals. “Don’t be surprised if you see me in a Tamil film soon,” she says, signing off.
