Capturing the mood of the first show of 'Oru Naal Iravil'

Earlier titled 'Night Show', editor Anthony’s directorial debut 'Oru Naal Iravil' released with U/A certification. Odd, considering the film talks about two nights a man spends with a sex worker as they get locked up in a tiny shop. Having watched the original, it’s not a film you expect to draw the family audiences. So it was surprising to see a large number of kids at a relatively full theatre to watch a film with a distinctly mature flavour.

With the theatre remaining quiet for most of the first half, the only scene that elicited a vociferous response was one where Yuhi Sethu taunts a police officer for not changing the blow pipe on the breathalyser when he is stopped for drunken driving.
The interval block sets the film up for some thrilling scenes.
Here are some of the audience reactions to the movie:

Dhanapalan: 

“ I liked the message of the film. It’s important that parents trust their children and the film has a nice way of conveying it. I would rate the film three out of five. Editor Anthony is famous for his quick cuts, but this is not as racy as his usual films though.

Vimal:

“ Anthony is one of the top editors.I wanted to see his debut as a director as I like the films he has edited. For the first 45 minutes, I couldn’t understand what was happening. The story didn’t seem to be going anywhere. It’s only towards the interval that the film began to warm up, especially after the sex worker’s character is introduced. Even though it’s just above two hours, it felt a lot longer. The idea was good, but it was not thrilling.

Saravanan:

“ The plot is fresh and experimental. This is not the usual stuff we see in Tamil cinema. But the problem is our audiences are not receptive to such films…hope this one is a hit.
As the audience left the theatre, two well-dressed men stood near the door. These two suddenly seemed familiar. Even the disappointed viewers had a smile on their face. ‘Oru selfie edukkalama?’ asked an audience member, recognising the actor who played the auto driver in the film. No one wants to pass up a photo op with an actor.
