Big box office clashes not good for industry and fans: Hrithik

Mumbai, Jan 29, 2017, (PTI)

Both SRK and Hrithik's films have been received well at the box office but the actor feels two big budget releases create unpredictability.

"Kaabil" and "Raees" were termed as one of the biggest box office battles of 2017 but Hrithik Roshan is happy that his film has been loved by the audience and critics alike despite the competition at the box office.

The actor, however, feels such clashes are not good for the film industry and fans.
Rakesh Roshan had expressed displeasure over this box office clash of "Kaabil" and "Raees" and the actor says his father merely wanted to protect the film industry from the clash as producers suffer financially.

"He (Rakesh Roshan) was talking about equality. These are things human beings have been fighting for since we have gained consciousness, freedom and equality," Hrithik told PTI.

"My father is talking about the progress of the industry, producers and for people, who can't watch two films in a week on big screen with family as it costs money.

So, it is better for everyone that these (big) kind of clashes don't happen."

Both SRK and Hrithik's films have been received well at the box office but the actor feels two big budget releases create unpredictability.

"There was lot of uncertainty this time because of the clash. If it was a solo film, we would have been on predictable note but because of the clash there was uncertainty," he says.

"But now the uncertainty is turning into certainty with all the feedback and love that we are getting. It comes to down to the same thing - if the film and content is good it works, you get rewards no matter what," he adds.

The 43-year-old actor, however, insists there is nothing much an actor can do in this as these are trade decisions.

"It is not for me to say. I have nothing to do with it. I am an actor and my focus was to better my work. Everything else is a story. If someone tells me anything about this person or that person its a story for me. I don't get affected by it," he says when asked if the clash between "Kaabil" and "Raees" should have been averted.

Despite losing out on business, releasing two big films at the same time is not new to Bollywood, it has happened in the past and it might continue as well this year.

Last year Hrithik's "Mohenjo Daro" released along side Akshay Kumar starrer "Rustom" and the latter came out as a winner of box office tussle.

Ask Hrithik if he would now try to avoid clash of his films with others, he says, "This is not in my hands alone, it is in the hands of executives. There is a rule that if we clash then we straight away divide it 50:50 (referring to screen space)."

"So, there is no 80:20 or 60:40 and if you follow 50:50 then the clash will stop automatically. That's the best way," he says.

John Hurt,'Elephant Man' Actor, dead at 77

London, Jan 28, 2017, (AFP) -

The actor, who received four BAFTAs during his career which began in the 1960s, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014. screen grab

Legendary British actor John Hurt, best known for playing a drug addict in "Midnight Express," Kane in "Alien," the title character in "The Elephant Man," and Winston Smith in "1984" has died. He was 77.

Hurt's agent confirmed the actor's death, reported Variety.

No cause of death was immediately known, but Hurt revealed in 2015 that he was battling pancreatic cancer.

The actor first came to prominence after appearing in the best picture Oscar-winning "A Man of All Seasons" in 1966.

Hurt, who decided against a career as an art teacher to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, appeared in countless TV and film roles, including roles in Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate," Stephen Frears' "The Hit," Sam Peckinpah's "The Osterman Weekend" and the 1984 adaptation of George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four," where Hurt played the novel's protagonist Winston Smith.

Hurt's portrayal of imprisoned heroin addict Max in 1978's "Midnight Express" netted the actor his first Golden Globe and BAFTA win as well as an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

Two years later, Hurt appeared in what was his greatest role as the anguished John Merrick in David Lynch's "The Elephant Man."

In recent years, Hurt appeared as Mr Ollivander, the wand-maker in the first Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone," and for parts 1 and 2 of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," however his scenes in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" were cut.

Hurt's distinct voice also graced characters in animated films like Watership Down and 1978's "Lord of the Rings."

Though he always prioritised film acting, Hurt also made regular appearances on stage, including the first West End production of David Halliwell's cult play "Little Malcolm" and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs in 1967.

Hurt also played numerous roles on TV, including Alan Clark in the 2004 adaptation of "The Alan Clark Diaries" and the "Doctor" in the 50th anniversary special episode of Doctor Who in 2013.

He was married four times, the first time to actress Annette Robertson in the early 1960s, the second time to Donna Peacock, the third time to Jo Dalton.

Survivors include the actor's fourth wife, producer Anwen Rees-Myers, whom Hurt married in 2005, and two children by Dalto.

Many celebrities took to Twitter to express their condolences on Hurt's demise.
"It was terribly sad today to learn of John Hurt's passing. He was a truly magnificent talent," tweeted Mel Brooks.

Stephen Fry tweeted, "Oh no. What terrible news. We've lost #JohnHurt as great on the stage, small screen and big. A great man & great friend of Norfolk & #NCFC".

Chris Evans said, "John Hurt was one of the most powerful, giving, and effortlessly real actors I've ever worked with. Remarkable human being. U will be missed."

"God speed to John Hurt, a legendary actor and good human being," Sharon Stone wrote.

Elijah Wood tweeted, "Very sad to hear of John Hurt's passing. It was such an honor to have watched you work, sir."

'Padmavati' album will be a treat for fans: Shreya Ghoshal

Mumbai, Jan 27, 2017 (PTI)

Singer Shreya Ghoshal. File Photo.

Her collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali has always resulted in iconic songs and singer Shreya Ghoshal says the music of the director's upcoming project "Padmavati" will be loved by her fans.
Shreya says she has some "interesting" songs in the period-drama which is scheduled to release in November.

"The film has some beautiful songs. 'Padmavati' is set in Rajasthan, it has a Srilankan connect also because she was from Srilanka. The fusion of folk and larger than life arrangements and grander treatment is amazing. It is going to be a treat," Shreya told PTI.

"I have some very interesting, different kind of songs in the film and I am waiting for it to release and see how it turns out on the big screen," she added.

The film features Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, the medieval-era Delhi ruler, who fell in love with queen Padmavati, played by Deepika Padukone.

"Padmavati" also features Shahid Kapoor as Raja Ratan Singh, the Rajput ruler and husband of Padmavati.

The 32-year-old singer, who bagged her first National Award for Bhansali's "Devdas", feels the director-composer puts in a lot of research in his music.

"Expect the same larger than life experience in the album. The amazing thing about him (Bhansali) is that he brings in so many different folk cultures of our country in his music.

"Everytime he touches upon that area, the research he does to understand the history, is beautiful. It comes very well in his songs. Apart from having a mass-effect, it has to be catchy also."

Shreya also feels that it is not only the songs, but also the way Bhansali picturises them which is amazing.

"He (Bhansali) is a poet when it comes to visuals, he makes it like a poetry. It is all nuances. Even as a singer, what sets two singers apart is the way that singer approaches the same idea in a very different way, or nuance.

"There is a signature style of adding nuances and it is the mark of any artist."

Bhansali assaulted, 'Padmavati' shooting stalled by protestors

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was allegedly assaulted here today by activists of a Rajput community group who also forced stoppage of shooting of his movie 'Padmavati' by vandalising the set at Jaigarh Fort, alleging that the director was "distorting facts".

Police said it had detained five persons for disturbing peace even though no complaint was received from Bhansali's side.

The ruckus took place when the film, in which Deepika Padukone is playing 'Padmavati' and Ranveer Singh is playing 'Alaudin Khilji', was being shot at the historic fort, eyewitnesses said.

The activists of Karni Sena gathered at the site and demanded stoppage of the shooting. They stormed the set and damaged some chairs and other objects, forcing stoppage of the shooting.

After the incident, the director decided not to go ahead with the shooting in the state. "We had warned the filmmakers against presenting wrong facts. When we came to know about the shooting, we gathered there and protested. Besides the Karni sena activists, there were several other people who had gone there to watch the shooting. Someone from the mob slapped him and pulled his hair," district president of Karni sena Narayan Singh claimed.

"There was a protest and the issue was settled after both the parties held talks," said DPC North (Jaipur) Anshuman Bhomia.

He said no FIR was lodged by anyone but five persons have been detained by the police for disturbing peace.

The filmmaker has said he will not go ahead with the shooting plans here and he will pack up, Bhomia said. Singh claimed that Bhansali wants to present a "distorted fact" about Rani Padmavati which will not tolerated by the Rajput community.

"We want that no distorted fact be shown in the film and have asked the filmmaker to take care of it. The Rajput community will strongly oppose any move of presenting wrong facts about Rani Padmavati," he said.

The director is yet to comment on the incident.

The committee headed by Minister of State for Information Maryam Aurangzeb had in its recommendations advised that the old policy that was in place before the screening of Indian films was suspended in the country should be maintained. Kaabil movie poster

Pakistan has issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the latest Bollywood film 'Kaabil', which is now set to release in the country this weekend after a four-month-long ban by government on the screening of Indian movies, following Indo-Pak tensions. An official of Hum Films told PTI that they were still awaiting NOC for the Shahrukh Khan-Mahira Khan starrer 'Raees' which would also be released soon.

"We are planning to release Kaabil on Friday once we get the clearance certificate from the Central Censor Board of Film Certification as well," he said. The NOC for 'Kaabil' was issued by the government on the recommendation of the committee formed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to look into the screening of Indian films locally, which had submitted a report to the Prime Minister's secretariat this week.

The committee headed by Minister of State for Information Maryam Aurangzeb had in its recommendations advised that the old policy that was in place before the screening of Indian films was suspended in the country should be maintained. The suspension of the screenings of Indian films came after several Bollywood producers banned casting Pakistani artists in Indian movies in the wake of Uri terror attack and 'surgical strikes' conducted by the Indian Army on terror launch pads along the LoC in Kashmir.

Nadeem Mandviwalla a well-known cinema owner, distributor and exhibitor said the release of 'Kaabil' would officially start the process of latest Indian films being screened in Pakistan. He said various cinema owners had suspended screening of Indian films in September last year in retaliation to the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA)'s ban on Pakistani actors, singers and technicians from working in India till "normalcy" returns.

"The cinema owners and industry suffered a lot of losses due to the suspension of Indian films screenings. But now it is getting back to normal," he added. 'Kaabil' was released in India on January 25th along with Raees. Hum Films has already purchased both films after paying advance money to distributors. Shah Rukh Khan starer 'Raees' feature Pakistani artist Mahira Khan, while Hrithik Roshan plays the lead in 'Kaabil'.

It's a big award (and) I think they would have seen something in me and so they gave me the award," Diljit told PTI. "For me the love of my fans matter the most and that's the biggest award for me. I love Harshvardhan Kapoor. I also like his father Anil Kapoor, he is a superstar," he added.

The Punjabi star won the best debut Filmfare award for his role in "Udta Punjab". Harshvardhan said the award should not be given to somebody who has worked in several films before heading to Bollywood. But Diljit says, "I think actors like Fawad Khan and Dhanush have acted in other languages (referring to Pakistani movies and films in South India)."

Interestingly, Fawad and Dhanush both made their Bollywood acting debut opposite Harshvardhan's sister Sonam. Besides this, gossip mills are abuzz that all is not well in Diljit's personal life. There were reports that Diljit and his wife aren't on talking terms and there's a huge communication gap between the two, especially once Diljit's Bollywood career has taken off.

"I read about it. I think in Bollywood one gets publicity even without asking for it," he added. Diljit will be seen as an expert in the upcoming singing reality show "Rising Star" along with Shankar Mahadevan and Monali Thakur. The show will be aired from February 4 on Colors channel.

Pak to allow screening of Indian films

Islamabad, Jan 25, 2017 (PTI)

Though, it became evident that Pakistani cinema owners might not be able to sustain losses as local film industry was still in the nascent stage and unable to create revenues. The cinema owners started lobbying the government to go soft on Indian films, prompting the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to set up a committee last week to consult all stake holders. Movie poster

Raees and Kaabil may become the first Indian movies to be screened in Pakistan after the government lifts the four-months-long ban on the screening of Bollywood movies in the country, following Indo-Pak tensions. The suspension of the screenings of Indian films came after several Bollywood producers banned casting Pakistani artists in Indian movies in the wake of Uri terror attack and 'surgical strikes' conducted by the Indian Army on terror launch pads along the LoC in Kashmir.

According to sources in the information ministry, the committee led by Minister of State for Information Maryam Aurangzeb and Sharif's advisor Irfan Siddiqui has made the recommendations to the PM's Secretariat to lift the ban. The committee urged the government to revert the ban and allow the screening of Indian films, they said. Once formally allowed by the Prime Minister, the information ministry will issue a letter allowing the import of Indian films.

It is believed that 'Raees' and 'Kaabil' are likely to be the first films to be screened after the lifting of ban. Shah Rukh Khan starer Raees also feature Pakistani artist Mahira Khan, while Hrithik Roshan plays the lead in Kaabil.

Shah Rukh Khan's Raees train promotion which left a man dead, kicked up a row against the actor but the deceased's mother has now come out in a support of the superstar, saying "he is not at fault".
Farid Khan Pathan died of cardiac rest as crowd went berserk after Shah Rukh arrived at the Vadodara railway station on Monday night by August Kranti Rajdhani Express.

He was the relative of a journalist, who was travelling in the same train with Shah Rukh.

Hours after the incident occurred, some sections blamed Shah Rukh for the tragedy. But the deceased's mother backed the actor saying "his promotional gimmick has nothing to do with her son's unfortunate demise".

"We have nothing against Shah Rukh Khan as he is not at fault. He is also like my son, I would like to thank him for making last moment arrangements for our family to be a part of my son's funeral.

"The incident has nothing to do with SRK's 'Raees' promotional event, my son fell prey to the crowd and succumbed to death due to suffocation. All we want is prayers from everyone for my son," she said in a statement.

Farid's niece, journalist Samina Shaikh, also said that the actor's team ensured that she and her family reached her uncle's funeral safely.

"It's unfortunate that my uncle lost his life due to suffocation in the crowd as he was a heart patient. However, Shah Rukh Khan and his team made sure that my mother and I reach safely to my uncle's funeral.

"We got down at Ratlam and SRK's team arranged a car for us to Vadodara to attend my uncle's burial," Shaikh said.

The journalist also spoke about how Shah Rukh broke down while consoling her.
"When I narrated the incident to Shah Rukh, he was in tears as he could genuinely feel the pain that I and my family were going through.

"Apart from making arrangements for me and my mother from Ratlam to Vadodara, he also made arrangements for my relatives who flew in from Mumbai to Vadodara to attend my uncle's last rites. Though SRK was busy with his film's promotions in Delhi event, he even made sure to know about my family and provided whatever help possible."

Too old for larger than life romantic films: Shah Rukh Khan

Mumbai, Jan 24, 2017 (PTI)

Shah Rukh feels there has to be some tenderness and chivalry in romance which is classic old school. File photo.

He may be called the King of Romance but superstar Shah Rukh Khan says he is now too old to do larger than life love stories.

The 51-year-old actor has often been hailed for ushering in modern day romance with films like "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayege," "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" among others and when asked if romantic films do not interest the audience anymore, Shah Rukh said the language of romance is different now.

"I think the times have changed a lot in terms of the language. Romance hasn't changed. I think people have less time. I also find this whole rightly-so pushed for equality I think creates more buddy-feel between men and women," Shah Rukh said in an interview.

"When you are buddies, you can't romance. There is a whole wave which I notice with youngsters, because I have kids and some young actors and actresses talk to each other very differently," he added.

The actor was speaking en route Delhi in August Kranti Rajdhani train, last night. He is visiting the capital to promote his latest crime-thriller "Raees".

Shah Rukh feels there has to be some tenderness and chivalry in romance which is classic old school.

"Romance has to have a little formality. Whether it's 'tehzeeb,' going down on your knees, whether it is saying couplets in praise of a girl. I am from that school, I still believe in it.

"I think romance has to be formal. 'Aur phir kya kar rahi hai?' It can't work like that, even if there is equality."

The "Fan" actor says his forthcoming film with Imtiaz Ali will have a mix of both the world- the old world romance and the new language.

"I think I am too old for a romantic film now, of that genre. May be the youngsters will have to find language which has formality but still of today.

"May be in Imtiaz's film it might be there because I am playing kind of my age, 40s, the lady of course Anushka is younger than me. There is this formality because he (Ali) belongs to that world, but the language is very Imtiaz. He is very modern thinking, has a different take on romance."

While the actor may say it is the buddy-feeling between youngsters today which is opposite to the old world romance, his film "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" popularised "pyaar dosti hai" to the generation of 90s.

When asked about the same, he said, "It must be, I am sure, for some it works. I don't believe in everything that I do. My daughter calls me bro. I want to ask her, and everyone, do they say it to other boys also? I am not saying it's wrong, it's really cool.

"But romance requires a little bit of formality, space, enjoyment. From the days of walking on the beach holding hands, to under starlit night to full moon night. All the connotation of romance need time and formality."

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, "Raees" is set to release on January 25.
